Guest speakers: What are Quakers doing today? (12:00 PM – 2:30 PM)

  • “Meadows and Manicured Lawns: Impact on Pollinators” Maureen Regan, Founder and President of Green Earth Urban Gardens Inc. will speak about how important it is that we develop Nature to Nurture our pollinators. Creating a sustainable environment brings harmony among all living things by developing beautiful habitats and teaching students to become future stewards of our environment. Ms. Regan will be working with Flushing Meeting to bring her education program to the Meeting House grounds this fall.
  • “Picture Me in College” Liz DiGiorgio, Educator, Artist, Women’s Caucus for Art UN Representative, and member of Flushing Meeting, will speak about her inspiring portrait project with homeless children and teens.
  • “The Flushing Interfaith Council” John Choe, Executive Director at Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce and Co-Clerk of Flushing Meeting will introduce us to the ongoing effort to build within Flushing a community that fulfills and surpasses the dream of toleration voiced by the Flushing Remonstrance more than 350 years ago.
  • “The American Friends Service Committee” Amy Gottlieb, NE Regional Director for AFSC will be on hand to describe this Noble Peace Prize winning Quaker organization that promotes lasting peace with justice, as a practical expression of faith in action.
  • “Alternatives to Violence Project” Mark Chapman from The Redemption Center in Brooklyn will be speaking to us about the AVP mission to empower people to lead nonviolent lives through affirmation, respect for all, community building, cooperation, and trust. AVP aims to reduce the violence by introducing people to ways of resolving conflict that reduce their need to resort to violence as the solution. The Alternatives to Violence Project is designed to create successful personal interactions and transform violent situations.
